How it works
- Type or paste your words. One per line, 5 to 30: this week’s spelling list, science vocabulary, the names of the states, party words. The counter shows how many you have and the longest one; repeats and characters a letter grid cannot hold are flagged with a fix button, never removed behind your back.
- Pick the puzzle. Choose the grid size and how hard it is: easy hides words across and down, medium adds diagonals, hard adds backwards words. Or make an easy, medium and hard set from the same list. Then the word bank, uppercase or lowercase, clean or school print letters and an optional color fill.
- Download the PDF and print. The puzzle comes with its answer key as the last page, and the button tells you how many pages you get. Print at 100% (“Actual size”) on US Letter (8.5 × 11 in) or A4 [210 × 297 mm]. Free, no sign-up, no watermark.
Tips for teachers and parents
- Teachers: one list, three levels. The easy + medium + hard set hides the same words in three grids, so a mixed class works on one list and checks answers together. The level shows in the corner of each sheet, small enough that nobody minds.
- Teachers: spelling check without a word bank. Choose “No word bank”, read the words aloud, and students find and write each one: listening, spelling and searching in one sheet.
- K–2 teachers and parents: 10 × 10, across and down only, uppercase or school print letters (the a and g children are taught) keep it doable for early readers.
- Homeschoolers: keep the puzzle number. The same number and list print the same puzzle again, for a sibling next year or a lost sheet.
- Everyone, save ink: Outline prints in black only; a light tint or a pattern on the frame dresses the sheet up for a party or a bulletin board.
Questions
What happens if my words don’t fit the grid?
Nothing is dropped. The maker tries hundreds of layouts; if a word still will not fit, it names the word, keeps the Download button off and offers a bigger grid (or diagonals) with one click. Many word search makers quietly leave such words out, and you find out in class.
Can a word show up twice by accident?
No. Every puzzle is checked so each word can be found in exactly one place, and the random letters never spell a rude word. A short word inside a longer one (cat in caterpillar) is pointed out under the list.
How many words should I use?
About 8 to 12 for a 10 × 10 grid, 12 to 18 for 15 × 15 and up to 30 for 20 × 20. Long words need a grid at least as wide as they are long.
Is it really free?
Yes: no account, no watermark and no limit on puzzles, for home and classroom use.
