Name tracing worksheets with start dots and stroke arrows. Teachers paste the class list for a page per child; parents type one name. Pick a grade preset and download a free PDF.

US Letter (8.5 × 11 in) [216 × 279 mm]

1 name

Type one child's name or paste the whole class: each name gets its own page. Names stay on this device and never go into the page address.

Presets

A preset sets the line size and look below; change anything after.

Headline to baseline, true to size when printed at 100%.

Rows

Each row starts with the name in solid letters, then traced copies; a name too long for two copies on a line gets one solid row, then traced rows.

How it works

  1. Type the names. One name per line, as many as your class has; each child gets their own page, in the order you typed or A to Z. Save the list on this device and it is one click away next time, here and in our other name tools. A capital first letter, then lowercase, is what most classrooms teach; if a name is in capitals, the tool offers to fix it.
  2. Pick a preset or set it yourself. Preschool (1 in [25 mm] lines, first letter solid), Kindergarten (3/4 in [19 mm]), Grade 1 (1/2 in [13 mm]) or OT large (1 1/2 in [38 mm], bold lines and a pale yellow band). Then print or cursive, rows, a trace look and an optional NAME / DATE line.
  3. Add the practice pack, then download. With the pack, each child gets three pages: the tracing page, rainbow writing (trace the name in red, blue, green and a color of their own) and cut and paste (cut the scrambled letters, glue them in order, count the letters, write the name alone). The Download button shows how many pages you get. Print at 100% (“Actual size”) on US Letter (8.5 × 11 in) or A4 [210 × 297 mm] so the lines keep their size; it is free, with no sign-up and no watermark.

Tips for name tracing

  • Preschool and kindergarten teachers, the whole class before Monday: paste the class list once, choose A to Z and print one PDF; every child’s page has the same layout. Do it again mid-year with a smaller line size.
  • Teachers, step down the help: start with Dotted, move to Faded, then First letter solid, so the child writes more of the name alone each time; switch the arrows off once the strokes are sure.
  • Occupational therapists: the OT large preset gives 1 1/2 in [38 mm] lines, bold rules and a yellow band that shows where the small letters sit. The green start dot and numbered arrows on the first copy teach the movement, not just the shape.
  • Parents, write it the way school will: a capital first letter and lowercase after (Emma, not EMMA) matches what kindergarten teachers expect. Slip the sheet into a page protector and trace with a dry-erase marker to use it again and again.
  • Homeschool parents, beyond the name: when the name comes easily, move on to letter tracing worksheets and kindergarten handwriting worksheets on the same lines.
