Turn your own words into print or cursive handwriting worksheets on your school’s lines. For teachers, homeschool parents and OTs: type or pick a passage, then download a free PDF.

US Letter (8.5 × 11 in) [216 × 279 mm]

Your own words or a preset below, one line per row, up to 12 lines. A long line wraps onto the next row; text that does not fit one page continues on page 2.

Letters
Line style

Plain: the dashed midline of our sheets. Three-line: red baseline, dashed blue midline. Two-line double: a pair of lines for the small letters. Sky-grass-dirt: light blue, green and brown bands. Four-line: the European and French Canadian ruling, with a line for the tails.

Line size

Top line to baseline; the tallest letters touch the top line. 1 in for preschool and kindergarten, 1/2 in from second grade, 3/8 in for third grade and up.

Mode

Trace: every line dotted. Trace then copy: a dotted row, then an empty row. Model then blank: solid letters to copy, with room beside them (a long line gets its own empty row).

Start dots

A green dot where each letter starts, on the first traced row of every line. Arrows number the strokes of print letters; cursive gets the dots.

How it works

  1. Start from a famous passage, or type your own. The sheet opens with a passage for the line size (Mother Goose at 1 in, Robert Frost at 1/2 in), as many lines as fit one page. The copywork presets are public-domain texts tagged by grade: nursery rhymes, days, months and numbers for K–1; Frost, Emily Dickinson, Aesop’s morals, the Pledge of Allegiance and the alphabet sentence for grades 2–3; the Gettysburg Address, the Preamble, Longfellow, Whitman and Shakespeare for grades 4 and up. Edit any line, clear the box for your own words (up to 12 lines), or choose Undo preset. Tick “Repeat the last line” to fill the rest of the page with more practice of that line.
  2. Choose the letters and the lines. Print or cursive; a line style: Plain, Three-line (red baseline, dashed blue midline), Two-line double, Sky-grass-dirt (light blue sky, green grass, brown dirt) or Four-line (European and French Canadian); a line size of 1 1/2 in, 1 in, 3/4 in, 1/2 in or 3/8 in [38, 25, 19, 13 or 10 mm]; and a mode: Trace, Trace then copy or Model then blank. Green start dots show where each letter begins; print letters can add numbered stroke arrows.
  3. Download the PDF and print. Every page is filled: the last page ends with empty rows. Print at 100% (“Actual size”) on US Letter (8.5 × 11 in) or A4 [210 × 297 mm] so the lines keep their size. It is free, with no sign-up and no watermark.

Tips for handwriting practice

  • Teachers, match the lines your school uses: many US classrooms teach on three-line paper with a red baseline and a dashed blue midline; kindergarten teachers often ask for sky-grass-dirt lines (tall letters touch the sky, small letters stay in the grass, tails go into the dirt); two-line double shows only the band for the small letters; four-line is the European and French Canadian ruling, with a line for the tails as well.
  • Teachers, line size by grade: 1 in for preschool and kindergarten, 3/4 in for first grade, 1/2 in from second grade, 3/8 in for third grade and up. Step up through the modes: Trace with the start dots, then Trace then copy, then Model then blank.
  • Occupational therapists and adult learners: Large print sets 1 1/2 in [38 mm] lines with bold rules, for low vision, early learners who need room, and adults relearning to write after a stroke or injury.
  • Homeschool parents, copywork that counts twice: copying a poem or a famous speech is practice in handwriting, spelling and punctuation at once, and a passage copied all week is often known by heart on Friday. Spelling words and sight words work too: type them one per line.
  • Parents, practice without typing: for a month of sheets ready to print, use Daily Handwriting Practice; for cursive, the cursive sentences worksheets.
